Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible. It is an acrostic Psalm, which means it is organized around the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, which would have been an aid to memorization. The Psalm is comprised of 22 sections of 8 verses each. The first letter of each verse in each section begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Thus, 22 letters times 8 verses gives us 176 verses in all. The end result is a beautiful, poetic arrangement, which declares the magnificence of God’s powerful word. Different terms are used of God’s word in this Psalm, including “law,” “word,” “saying,” “commandment,” “statute,” “judgment,” “precepts,” “testimony,” “way,” etc.
