52LESSONTHE TEN COMMANDMENTSEXODUS 20:1-17S U N DAY S C H O O L TE AC H E R ’ S G U I DEIntroduction Today’s lesson covers Exodus 20:1-17, one of the well-known passages in all of Scripture. The Ten Commandments are also known as the “Decalogue,” a term that can be traced to Exodus 34:28 and Deuteronomy 4:13. This giving of the Law of God to Moses is an epoch-making event in the history of mankind. The Law reveals God’s holy character and human sinfulness. The Law of God is both negative and positive, but such is the very nature of moral law. Moral law is always double-sided. When an evil is forbidden, the good is encouraged. The law is positive because it reflects God’s character and brings God’s blessings. As Paul states in Romans 7:12, “the Law is holy, righteous, and good.” One must also keep in mind that a righteous standing before God has always been by grace through faith (see Gen. 15:6 and Romans 4:3, 22). Exodus 20:1-17 may be divided into three parts: an introduction to the Ten Commandments; commandments which pertain to our relationship with God; commandments which pertain to our relationship with others.
