Job and Ecclesiastes Lesson 4 - Seek God's Wisdom in Suffering

Job  28,  the  "wisdom  chapter,"  is  distinct  from  the  rest  of  the  book.  The  chapter  serves  an  important  purpose  as  an  interlude  between  the  debate  cycle  and  the  major  sections  that  follow  and  allows  the  reader  an  opportunity  for  reflection  upon  Job's  dilemma  from  another  perspective.  As  for  Job  and  his  three  friends,  they  have  come  to  an  impasse  in  their  debate.  From  the  friend's  point  of  view,  Job's  suffering  must  be  related  to  sin.  Job,  however,  has  maintained  his  innocence  all  along.  So,  the  point  of  the  digression  on  wisdom  is  to  demonstrate  the  powerlessness  of  human  efforts  to  ascertain  those  secrets  that  belong  only  to  God.  Job's  friends  arrogantly  assume  to  know  all  the  answers.  The  truth  of  the  matter  is  that  we  cannot  fully  ascertain  God's  wisdom.  It  is  a  gift  from  God  that  is  attained  through  the  "fear  of  the  Lord".
