At this point in the letter Paul has argued persuasively and decisively against any form of legalism with respect to the Christian and the law. The Christian life is a life of freedom. The believer is not under the law, either as a means to salvation or as the governing principle of life. This freedom, however, does not imply a license to sin. Rather, freedom expresses itself in loving service to others. But how can one avoid sin and maintain righteous standards in light of this newfound "freedom?" Who or what regulates the Christian's behavior? The answer lies in the reality of the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. Those who are led by the Spirit are not under the law.
