The book of Ezra recounts the return of a remnant of God’s people to the Promised Land following 70 years of Babylonian exile for the re- establishment of temple worship. There are two “returns” recorded in Ezra (a third return is led by Nehemiah). The first is a return is led by Zerubbabel with the intent to rebuild the temple (chapter 1-6). The second return is led by Ezra for the purpose of spiritual reformation (chapters 7-10). Rebuilding apart from spiritual reformation is ineffective. God requires both of his people! The book of Ezra was written with both historical and theological intent. Ezra wrote to remind the people of God of their covenant obligations. Thematically, Ezra is consistent with other OT historical books with emphasis upon God's sovereignty, worship, prayer, and obedience.
